Locket's Meadow Farm is not the usual riding center. Established in 2000 by David Melina and Kathleen Schurman, the original goal was to move to the country and have a little space to bring in a few rescued ducks, goats and maybe a pony. The couple quickly learned that if you open the door a crack, a whole flood of needy and desperate animals would barge right through. They began rescuing PMU horses from slaughter, fell madly in love with all of them, and there was no going back. While they never had any intention of operating a riding center, once the many rescued horses had been trained, they needed jobs, so the next logical step was to create a lesson program.

Currently there are eighteen horses, mostly PMUs, working in the lesson program.  Most of the horses also work in the therapeutic riding program that serves children and adults with physical, mental and emotional challenges. At Locket's Meadow we've learned that horses who have been given a second chance at life become amazing lessons ponies who are generous and affectionate. And unlike at most farms, every animal here is also a family pet, and you will quickly find they all know their names and respond when they are called.

Other rescues on the farm include sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, burros, pigs, peacocks, cats and dogs. Many of these are in training to become part of the animal-oriented recreational therapy program that is currently in development.

Lockets Meadow Rescue Sanctuary (aka FASTeam) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization based on the farm that raises funds as well as helps to organize the many volunteers needed to help with chores, therapeutic riding and basic training and handling. Volunteers are always welcome, please call 203-599-5664 for more information.

Visitors are welcome as we love to share our "babies" and show them off. We ask that you come with love in your heart and respect for our animals. Please read the Code of Ethics and note that hitting or striking out at any of our animals is strictly forbidden and violators will be immediately escorted from the property. Please remember this is a private home and each animal, no matter what it is, is a beloved, personal pet.
