Lockets Meadow - Captain of the Dance
What a wonderful book.. all sorts of wonders, and very enjoyable to read. The story takes place at Lockets Meadow, a horse rescue center. Kathleen, the author (and co-owner) is quick and perceptive, often hilarious, always clever and imaginative. The animals have great personalities, and their group life is interesting as well as fun. Our relationship to nature and animals is treated in a thought provoking way, through moments of K's personal awareness, and also through the unrelenting critical voice of one character. The book presents life realities, dear friendships and loss, as well as the hard work of the rescue farm and veterinary medicine. The reading trip is even mind expanding, conjuring new possibilities of communication and confluence of here and there, life and death, sadness and humor. An enjoyable, and educational book.
In the vain of the best Magical realism, Kathleen Schurman's "The Captain of the Dance" is a beautiful, stirring story of a farm for lost animals and the gentle people who live there and watch over it. The death of a beloved friend, a wayward mare, Kathleen the kind an somewhat otherworldly owner, all populate "Lockets Meadow" a place of refuge both in the literal and metaphoric senses. The writing is delicate and direct and often funny. The characters are lifelike and always full of color and originality. Finally the episodic nature of the story is welcome in a busy world when a good book can be picked up and put down. then picked up again a bit later. For readers who care about animals, love and renewal read, "The Captain of the Dance." (Its the second in a series, so do go ahead and sometime read the first)
